Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – 7‑Day Lemosho Route Adventure

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to Moshi, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. After check-in at your hotel, you will have time to relax and prepare for the trek.

A pre-trek briefing will cover the hiking route, daily schedule, safety procedures and mountain conditions. Your trekking equipment can also be checked and prepared with the trekking team before the adventure begins.

After breakfast, drive from Moshi towards the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Lemosho Gate, where your trekking adventure officially begins. After completing registration and final preparations, you will enter the magnificent montane rainforest.

The trail is surrounded by towering trees, dense vegetation, moss-covered forest and the sounds of mountain wildlife. This peaceful environment provides a beautiful introduction to Kilimanjaro before gradually reaching Big Tree Camp, a scenic forest campsite surrounded by ancient trees.

Trekking Distance: Approximately 8 km | Trekking Time: 5–6 hours | Altitude: Shira 1 Camp ~3,505 m

After breakfast, continue your ascent through the upper forest before gradually entering the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter and more open as the landscape changes dramatically.

The trail eventually opens onto the extraordinary Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most impressive landscapes. Vast high-altitude plains, volcanic formations and expansive views create a striking contrast to the rainforest of the previous day. With clear weather, you may enjoy magnificent views towards Kibo Peak, the highest summit of Kilimanjaro.

Trekking Distance: Approximately 14–16 km | Trekking Time: 7–9 hours | Highest Point: Moir Hut area ~4,200 m | Barranco Camp: ~3,960 m

Today is an important acclimatization stage as you climb deeper into Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment. The trail crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau, passing through open alpine landscapes and dramatic volcanic terrain.

You will ascend towards the Moir Hut area, a remote and impressive high-altitude setting beneath the western slopes of Kibo. From here, the route continues towards the Barranco Valley, gradually descending to Barranco Camp.

The day follows the principle of “climb high, sleep lower,” giving your body valuable time to adapt to the increasing altitude while enjoying some of the mountain’s most dramatic scenery.

Trekking Distance: Approximately 9–10 km | Trekking Time: 7–9 hours | Altitude: Karanga ~4,035 m | Barafu ~4,673 m

After breakfast, begin the spectacular climb up the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route. Although steep in places, the trail is rewarding and offers impressive views across the surrounding valleys and mountain ridges.

Continue towards Karanga Camp, passing through rugged alpine terrain before making the final ascent towards Barafu Camp, the main base for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic as you enter the high alpine desert.

Upon arrival at Barafu, the trekking team will prepare you for the summit night. You will have an early dinner and rest as much as possible before beginning the final ascent during the night.

Trekking Distance: Approximately 18–20 km total | Trekking Time: 12–15 hours | Summit: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m | Mweka Camp: ~3,100 m

The ultimate day begins around midnight, when you start your summit ascent under the stars. The climb towards Stella Point is demanding, with steep terrain and high altitude requiring a slow, steady pace.

After reaching Stella Point, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. Reaching the summit is an extraordinary achievement, rewarded with spectacular panoramic views and the unforgettable experience of standing above the clouds on the Roof of Africa.

After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin the descent towards Barafu before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The descent provides a dramatic change in scenery as the landscape gradually becomes greener and more sheltered.

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the beautiful Mweka rainforest, where the cool, green environment provides a refreshing contrast to the high-altitude landscapes experienced during the climb.

Continue to Mweka Gate, where you will complete the official exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to Moshi for a well-deserved refreshment before continuing to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight.

Your remarkable Kilimanjaro adventure comes to an end, leaving you with an unforgettable sense of achievement and memories of conquering Africa’s highest mountain.
