After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate the official entrance to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing registration and meeting your mountain crew, the trek begins through the spectacular montane rainforest a world of towering trees, colourful flowers, moss, and exotic birdlife.

The trail is surrounded by enormous tropical vegetation, ancient trees, ferns, and mosses, while the forest provides opportunities to hear and observe different bird species and other wildlife. The gradual ascent allows you to settle into a comfortable trekking rhythm while enjoying the refreshing mountain atmosphere. As you progress deeper into the forest, the landscape becomes increasingly secluded and atmospheric. Eventually, you arrive at Mandara Hut, located near the upper edge of the rainforest.

After breakfast, continue your ascent from Mandara through the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro. The dense rainforest gradually disappears behind you as you enter the beautiful heath and moorland zone a world of open landscapes, giant heathers, volcanic vegetation, and dramatic mountain scenery.

One of the most impressive features of today's trek is the growing presence of Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones. Its jagged volcanic formations create an extraordinary backdrop as you continue toward Horombo. The trail gradually climbs across open moorland until you reach Horombo Hut, positioned at approximately 3,720 metres. From here, the surroundings become increasingly dramatic, with spectacular views toward Mawenzi Peak and, weather permitting, glimpses of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone.

Today marks a dramatic change in scenery as you leave the vegetation of the moorland behind and enter the alpine desert zone a landscape that becomes increasingly barren, rocky, and otherworldly, with very little vegetation surviving at this altitude.

Here you will have an early dinner and prepare for the most challenging and rewarding part of the adventure the midnight summit attempt.

After several hours of challenging uphill trekking, you reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim.
